The 30-Minute Technical Triage for Underperforming URLs
If a page drops, the worst first move is random rewriting. The best first move is diagnosis. This is the exact triage flow I use to decide whether a page has a technical illness, an on-page mismatch, or simply a demand problem.
Start with the boring question: can Google even trust this URL?
Most teams jump to headlines and intros because copy feels tangible. But ranking systems need stable technical signals before they reward wording changes. I start with crawlability, indexability, canonical consistency, and response behavior. Is the page returning a clean 200? Is the canonical pointing to itself or silently voting for another URL? Is there a noindex tag left from staging? Is the page discoverable from internal links, or effectively buried under six clicks and a prayer? I also include expected signal change: crawl stability, index inclusion, snippet quality, or topical depth. This keeps stakeholders focused on outcomes and prevents debates from becoming subjective.
